Why test for asbestos?

The presence of asbestos can be a cause for concern. This is due to the associated risk of developing an asbestos-related disease through exposure to respirable fibres which are produced when asbestos items are abraded or broken. When such fibres are released into the internal environment, they can linger as an exposure hazard for many years to come.

Additionally, where asbestos items are present at a workplace, the site owner (PCBU) must have a register of all asbestos items available for site occupants (VIC OHS Regulations 2017, a ‘Division 5’ report). Prior to demolition works, it is also a requirement that materials be tested to ensure that asbestos is not accidentally disturbed.

Still unsure whether to test for asbestos or not, contact Vertex Analytics today.

How do you test for asbestos?

In order to test an item for asbestos, it must be submitted to the laboratory in a double zip-locked bag and be uniquely identified. A minimum of 5 grams of material, or a piece the size of a 50c coin is generally recommended. This is so that your results are representative of the material under investigation. For large areas where it is not known if all materials are the same, additional samples are advised to characterise the site.

When submitting asbestos analysis samples, your sample information along with company or personal details must be recorded in the following document:

‘Chain of Custody’ document (asbestos)

So if you require guidance on your sampling strategy, contact the Vertex asbestos testing services laboratory today.

Asbestos Removal

While we don’t remove asbestos ourselves, Vertex Analytics’ supervisory consultants will ensure removal practices are safe. We’ll also ensure it complies with current Australian health and safety standards.  In addition, our consultants offer a full asbestos management service. Our trained assessors can provide a visual clearance certificate after the asbestos testing and removal, verifying that all visible asbestos has been removed from the site.
